Today Charity and I did the bridge climb, and walked to the top of the Sydney Harbor Bridge! (see the flags in the picture at the top- we went all the way up there!) It is something that I have been looking forward to for a while, and it was well worth the wait, and the money. Unfortunately I do not have any pictures because we couldn't take our cameras... but luckily I got a free photo of the group of us who went.
There are many reasons why I love the Harbor Bridge:
1. The history behind the bridge is amazing. Our guide, Dave, told us stories about how the bridge was built. There used to be a big neighborhood in the area where the left side of the bridge is. So many people were crammed into such a small area that personal hygiene was a major problem. After a few people died the New South Wales government completely evacuated the area, and demolished it to avoid a plague that had ravaged parts of Europe. Plus, the government wanted to build a bridge, so it worked out well for them.
2. The bridge was known as the 'iron lung' to the men who worked on it. The name was given to the bridge because it was built during the Great Depression and kept many, many families from starving.
3. It is absolutely beautiful.
4. You can walk to the top of it, see underneath it, and learn about the experiences of those who helped build it. Plus you get a great view of the city!
5. When it was built North Sydney did not exist. People thought it was completely crazy to build such a huge bridge to nowhere. Clearly it was a genius idea because it can sustain a ridiculous amount of traffic today... and North Sydney is huge.
After looking at pictures of the bridge for years and years, I have finally been able to not only see it, but walk on top of it! It was a great experience and I'm so glad I did it.
